What makes a dog school good?

A good dog training school is one of the most important decisions in the development of a young dog. This is especially true for first-time dog owners, for whom training and imprinting are understandably unfamiliar territory. It is crucial what kind of support they receive during the training of their companion. In Switzerland, the title “dog trainer” is not legally protected, and in principle, anyone can open a dog training school. This makes it even more challenging to find a reliable provider.
The question of what constitutes a good dog school cannot be answered definitively. However, there are a few key points to consider when choosing one. A good starting point is certainly a personal recommendation. Don’t hesitate to ask other dog owners with well-behaved pets — for example, those you meet on a walk — which school they attended. Such a question is a compliment to the dog’s behavior and is usually gladly answered.
Check the school’s website or give them a call to get a first impression. Also, trust your gut feeling. The most important thing is that you have a good impression and feel comfortable from the beginning.
A good school will offer small groups and treat every dog as an individual. A trainer should never lose patience with you or your pet, no matter how long an exercise takes. The foundation of modern dog training is positive reinforcement. Especially puppies and young dogs need many positive experiences with people to develop calm and reliable behavior. Training methods based on pain, fear, or intimidation have no place in this context. Every animal learns at its own pace, and a good trainer will adapt to each dog individually. If an exercise doesn’t work, a different method or approach is tried.
Good trainers are also willing to visit your home if needed, to practice together with you or observe a specific situation. You should never feel like you have “failed.” Instead, you’ll be supported with patience and understanding, and every situation will be handled positively. Not every dog or owner needs to master every exercise perfectly — what’s far more important is that you and your companion find your way together in everyday life and build a foundation of deep trust and security.
